History of creation:

The laboratory of nuclear-physical constants was created in the 1970s on the initiative of the Academician A. Krasin of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR. The first head was Dr.Sc. V. A. Konshin.

The main directions of scientific research (fundamental and applied), projects:

The team carries out scientific research in various areas. Among them are – research of the mechanism of interaction of nucleons with atomic nuclei in the region of low, intermediate and high energies. On this basis, models and methods for calculating the characteristics (nuclear-physical constants) of the interaction of nucleons with atomic nuclei are created. Laboratory staff work on the evaluation of nuclear data and the creation of assessed data files, including:

  • analysis of experimental data and development of theoretical methods and corresponding mathematical programs allowing calculations, parametrization, estimation and prediction of neutron interaction cross sections with atomic nuclei in the neutron energy range from 10-5 eV to 200 MeV and higher;
  • Evaluation of nuclear-physical constants required for the constant supply of applied tasks important for the national economy of Belarus, provision of calculations and design of nuclear power plants and other applications, including the theoretical prediction of neutron constants in those energy and mass regions where there are no experimental data;
  • Creation of new and revision of existing complete systems (files) of the evaluated nuclear data and their presentation in a standard format for inclusion in the libraries of estimated neutron data;
  • ensuring the tasks on expertise, support of construction and operation of the NPP being built in Belarus.

Principal achievements (developments):

The laboratory’s work was highly appreciated by foreign colleagues. A number of research is conducted in a wide scientific cooperation with the leading nuclear-physical centers of Japan, China, France, Spain, Korea, the USA and the IAEA. The program for calculation of optical cross-sections by the method of communication channels developed in the laboratory is recognized as standard one, it is installed and being used in most of the nuclear centers of these countries. For 20 years, the laboratory carried out projects in cooperation with the International Science and Technology Center. The specialists of the laboratory repeatedly delivered reports on the results of their activities at international conferences, where they were also highly appreciated. Many works are published in international journals with a high impact factor, and are also available for international use on the IAEA website (https://www-nds.iaea.org/RIPL-3/). Laboratory works are constantly cited, only for 2017 – more than 230 times in refereed journals

Prospective works:

The work on the development of the OPTMAN software package for calculating optical cross-sections by the coupled-channel method is being continued, which involves physically based models based on the structure of the collective core levels.
